Are socket covers dangerous?

Well, you'd hope not, wouldn't you?

Whilst in the process of buying drawer locks etc at the moment, my wise dad pointed me in the direction of this website: http://www.fatallyflawed.org.uk/

To summarise the content, it points out that UK electrical sockets have a built-in safety shutter (others in the EU and the States don't).

When safety covers are plugged in, they serve to open the shutter and leave the charge vulnerable to pokey fingers. Here's a photo from their site to show what happens:

This is backed up by the Members of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), who are campaigning to have them banned in the UK. The Telegraph have also written about it the dangers of socket cover.

Before you go out to buy the covers, consider the information above. It might save a few pennies, but more importantly a few little fingers too.
